Introducing Barrie McDermott

Barrie McDermott in Rugby League terms is a living legend. The former Super League and international rugby league player now enjoys contrasting roles as a Pundit for Sky Sports, and having a number of interests as a businessman.

McDermott experienced a playing career of 15 topflight seasons, featuring for his hometown club Oldham RLFC, Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos and finishing at the Widnes Vikings.

During his time he achieved honours of winning the Super League and world club championship with the Leeds Rhinos as well as attaining over 30 international caps between Great Britain and Ireland.

After retiring from playing in 2006, he returned to the Rhinos as a Business Development Manager whilst studying and achieving a degree in Sports Coaching and Management at Leeds Beckett University.

After three years as a BDM, he then became Leeds’ official Head of Youth Development for a further five years.

He would serve his final two years at the Rhinos as their Head of Player Welfare, before departing the club in September 2015.

Immediately after his departure, McDermott then became the Co-owner and Director of FrontRow1895, a sports and life management company that’s interest revolves around player welfare, from October 2015 – November 2016.

Whilst there, from April 2016, he also became the Brand Ambassador for AFEX, the world’s largest non-bank providers of foreign exchange solutions, who offer cost effective and tailored hedging strategies to manage currency risk.

He remains with AFEX currently as a Business Consultant.

During his aforementioned job roles, since retirement, McDermott has also enjoyed over 10 years as a regular summariser and commentator for Sky Sports.

With his diverse repertoire of holding a vast mix of niche roles within the sports and media industries, as player, pundit, sports administrator and businessman, we will be lucky to get his insight into how he sees the future of sport and the media unfolding over the next decade.
